Historical dinner with Simmelkjaer, a shipbroker in Elsinore in 1816

Presented by Helsingør Kommunes Museer

A Historical dinner with all communication only in Danish!

On 19th August, the doors will be opened for a historical dinner in the year of 1816 when Simmelkjær and his wife invites to dinner. As a shipbroker and a merchant, Simmelkjær is part of the elite in Elsinore, and dinners at his house mean the finest dishes with an exotic twist and foreign ingredients. Besides pleasures for the palate and stomach, parties at Simmelkjær always include stories from the world and the local gossip. What did make that racket this morning at the harbour, what was it with the maid at the Dutch shipbroker's, and what is happening at Kronborg this summer, with the talk of showing Hamlet, Shakespeare's play?

In the year of 1816, Elsinore was teeming with life and meetings with foreign cultures. At the harbour were the big mansions of the shipbrokers side by side to sell goods and take toll from the docking ships.
Feel and taste the history on your own when the clocks are set back 200 years for a night with this dinner.
